On Being Human

“There is a strange duality in the human which makes for an ethical paradox. We have definitions of good qualities and of bad. And yet in our structure of society, the so-called and considered good qualities are invariable concomitants of failure, while the bad ones are the cornerstones of success. When such a man considers Jesus or St. Augustine or Socrates he regards them with love because they are symbols of the good he admires, and hates the symbols of the bad. But actually he would rather be successful than good.” (John Steinbeck, “Sea of Cortez”, 1941.)

Satan walks in confidence through our society while the good cower in the dark; unknown. We want to be good but we opt for the smartly dressed acceptance of evil. Being bad is so “GOOD” and being good is for wimps and the uniformed. The virgin is the exception to the rule of everybody MUST have sex before they are married. If there were no virginity then there would be no excitement in losing it. If there were no good in the world then being bad would lose its appeal.

THAT is why the modern media and modern liberal arts colleges continue to excoriate Christians. In order to keep the excitement of sin you need to keep the remnant of those who believe it IS sin. Without the feeling of doing wrong, you are left with the simple ordinary and mundane. If everybody is doing it then what is a rebel to do?

Albert Speer started out as an architect, he loved building. On February 8 of 1942 he was chosen to be Minister of Armaments and War Production for the Third Reich under Adolf Hitler. He had an AMAZING track record of getting war production accomplished and even increasing through Allied bombing. He was tried in 1945 and sentenced to 20 years in prison for using forced prison camp labor to run his factories. After the guilty verdict he was asked if he knew what was going on in those prison camps and how he could work along with Hitler’s schemes. Speer answered, “It is hard to know the devil when his hand is on your shoulder.”

Most would rather be successful and bad than good and poor.

Most play with evil as with a toy and cast good into the bag for the garage sale.

Most consider Christian morals passé and cute as long as OTHER’S continue to hold onto them.

Most no longer even recognize the devil even though his hand is on their shoulder.

Where are you?
